Get the look: bridal style inspired by red carpet moments

Théoro La Nuit champagne silk slip dress cut on the bias at Mae Bridal, silk slip dress, champagne slip dress, minimalist wedding dress

Every awards season, something from the red carpet trickles into our fitting rooms within weeks. Brides come in with a screenshot, or more often just a feeling: they want a dress that moves like liquid, holds a scoop back, and photographs like old Hollywood glamour instead of a traditional ball gown. The look itself is not new. Bias cut silk has been doing this exact job on red carpets and at weddings for the better part of a century, and we have four gowns in our showroom right now built on that same idea.

What is the old Hollywood bridal look

The silhouette traces back to the 1930s, when bias cut silk first let a gown skim the body instead of fighting it, and it has resurfaced on red carpets and down aisles in waves ever since. The signature moves are consistent across every decade it shows up in: fabric cut on the bias so it drapes rather than holds a rigid shape, a neckline that follows the collarbone instead of sitting on top of a boned bodice, and a back, often scooped low, that does as much visual work as the front. It photographs beautifully because the silk catches light in a way no structured fabric can, and it reads as glamorous without needing a single sequin or crystal.

Four gowns that nail the look

La Nuit, Théoro

Théoro La Nuit champagne silk slip dress cut on the bias at Mae Bridal, silk slip dress, champagne slip dress, minimalist wedding dress

A champagne silk slip cut on the bias, with a draped neckline that follows the natural line of the body rather than fighting it. This is the closest thing we carry to a vintage screen siren moment, minus any of the artifice. It is made to order by Théoro, available at Mae Bridal. Shop the La Nuit gown, from $2,900.

Cornelia slip dress, Théoro

Théoro Cornelia Slip Dress silk crepe de chine bias cut slip at Mae Bridal, silk slip dress, white slip dress, bias cut slip dress

Cut from silk crepe de chine with side slits at the hem, Cornelia flows rather than sits, so it moves on camera the same way it moves when you walk. It is made to order by Théoro, available at Mae Bridal. Shop the Cornelia slip dress, from $3,100.

Simone dress, Claire La Faye

Claire La Faye Simone silk charmeuse slip dress with open scoop back at Mae Bridal

A bias cut silk charmeuse slip with liquid drape and an open scoop back that is really the whole point of the dress. It is quiet and minimal from the front and does something far more dramatic when you turn around, which is exactly the red carpet trick. It is made to order by Claire La Faye, available at Mae Bridal. Shop the Simone dress, from $1,795.

May dress, Théoro

Théoro May Dress asymmetric georgette layer over French lace at Mae Bridal, lace wedding dress, georgette wedding dress, old hollywood wedding dress

If the other three whisper old Hollywood, May says it outright. An asymmetric georgette layer drapes over a mini dress of fine French lace underneath, so you get the glamour of a sweeping overlay with a lighter dress doing the actual work. It is made to order by Théoro, available at Mae Bridal. Shop the May dress, from $5,400.

How to style the old Hollywood bridal look

The dress is already doing most of the talking, so keep the rest of the look quiet. Soft finger waves or a low, glossy bun read truer to the era than loose curls do. Skip the statement necklace entirely if your gown has a low back like Simone's, since you want eyes going there instead of competing with it, and reach for drop earrings instead. A classic red or deep berry lip is the one place we will tell a bride to go bold, it is the detail that makes the whole look feel intentional rather than accidental.

Red carpet bridal style, answered

What makes a dress read as old Hollywood rather than just a slip dress?

Fabric and finishing. A true old Hollywood bias cut uses heavier silk or silk charmeuse that holds its drape, plus a detail like a cowl neckline, a low back, or lace layering, like May's. A plain slip in a lighter fabric reads more modern and minimal than vintage glamorous.

Does a bias cut silk gown work for every body type?

Bias cut fabric is forgiving because it moves with the body instead of holding a fixed shape, but fit still matters enormously on a dress with this little structure. We always recommend trying these on in person, since the drape changes noticeably with even small adjustments to the straps or hem.

Can I wear a statement necklace with a bias cut slip gown?

You can, but we would steer you toward a low back style like Simone's instead, since a necklace tends to compete with the neckline rather than complement it. Drop earrings or a hair piece usually read better with this silhouette.

How far in advance should I order a made to order silk slip gown?

Plan on several months for production with Théoro and Claire La Faye. Our team will give you an exact timeline for each designer when you come in for a fitting, so we would rather you start the appointment early than rush the order later.
